All Aboard for 2025! 200 years ago, in 1825, the world witnessed a revolutionary moment when George Stephenson’s ‘Locomotion No.1’ carried the first passengers on a train along the Stockton and Darlington Railway. Throughout 2025, the UK is set to commemorate this bicentennial of passenger rail travel with a year-long celebration, Railway 200 – an amazing program of events highlighting the rich history and future of rail travel.
Key highlights include:- The Greatest Gathering taking place at Derby’s historic Litchurch Lane Works from 1–3 August 2025, an event showcasing historic and modern rail vehicles, with rides, miniature train displays and family-friendly activities. A special £2 Royal Mint Commemorative Coin will be released to honour the anniversary. ‘Inspiration’, a unique exhibition train, will be visiting 60 locations across the country from 27 June 2025 until summer 2026.
