Norfolk has everything you need for a September get away…and it does it quietly. As they say in the home of Boudicca and Nelson, “…slow you down, boy.”
Walk the Deep History Coast, between Weybourne and Happisburgh, in the footsteps left by the UK’s first ‘tourists’ nearly a million years ago. And take in the world’s biggest mammoth skeleton.
On down the coast – Norfolk has 90 miles of beaches and cliffs, marshes and creeks – to Blakeney Point, home to the largest seal colony in England. This month you’ll be in time to greet the migrating birds at the world renowned nature reserves of Welney, Cley Marshes, Snettisham and Titchwell. Pensthorpe Natural Park has a wildlife adventure in store.
Then it’s inland to the stately homes that helped make Norfolk one of the richest counties in England – Felbrigg, Blickling, Oxborough, Holkham… and Sandringham, a favourite Royal family home.
Learn more about Boudicca, Norfolk’s scourge of the Romans, at Norwich Castle Museum and Gallery. It’s the perfect foil to a county steeped in history, set in the medieval masterpiece that is the City of Norwich with its Norman castle and 11th century cathedral.
More of the past at Great Yarmouth, where Time and Tide tells the story of the great fishing fleets that packed the harbour. The medieval town, best known for its seafront fun fairs, boasts its own Nelson’s Monument, a spectacular column just 25 feet shorter than London’s Nelson’s Column. Admiral Lord Nelson was born in Burnham Thorpe.
September is a great time to visit Norfolk’s national park, The Broads. This watery wilderness of 125 miles of rivers and flooded peat diggings is home to a quarter of Britain’s rarest animals and plants. A place of mystery. See for yourself.
And we mustn’t forget one of the county’s many contributions to the national table…the Norfolk Bronze turkey. With its shimmering green plumage, it’s considered the gold standard of turkeys. Just don’t mention Christmas to it!
There’s plenty going on in Norfolk this September, including the North Norfolk Railway 1940s Weekend and the North Norfolk Food Festival at Holkham Hall, as well as the Summer Shows still taking place on Cromer Pier and Great Yarmouth Hippodrome.
