We’ve selected a few ideas from our ‘Literary Heroes’ to help you on your way….

Lake Windermere, England’s largest lake, is an impressive 10.5 miles long, 1 mile wide and has a depth of 220 feet. Arthur Ransome, used the lake as the backdrop to his well-loved book, ‘Swallows and Amazons’, the story of four children and their summer holiday adventures.

There are many opportunities to enjoy Windermere from the water including a trip on a cruise boat or motor boat, rowing, kayaking and swimming. One of our B&Bs, Blenheim Lodge , nestles upon a quiet hilltop, commanding panoramic views of Lake Windermere and the fells, and just a 5 minute walk to the lake itself and Bowness centre.

It is no surprise that Beatrix Potter fell in love with the beautiful countryside surrounding her childhood holiday home, Hill Top Cottage  – scenic landscapes and places that inspired the wealth of characters such as Peter Rabbit, Jemima Puddle-Duck and Mrs. Tiggywinkle, much loved by generations! Experience the beauty and wonder at Derwent Water, where Beatrix spent nine summer holidays in Lingholm and one at Fawe Park, now two stately homes or meet the characters from her books at The World of Beatrix Potter Attraction at Crag Brow, Bowness.

Dove Cottage near Grasmere was home to one of our best-known poets William Wordsworth. He lived there for nine years with his sister Dorothy, wife Dora and three small children.

Wordsworth described this humble cottage and garden as ‘’the loveliest spot that man hath ever found’’.
