With the long hot days stretching ahead of us (we can but hope!), it’s a good time to plan a break away. So, continuing with our focus on various destinations around the country, Lincolnshire may sometimes be unjustifiably overlooked, so here are some insights highlighting this great county!
Best-known for its popular seaside resorts, such as Cleethorpes and Skegness, one of Lincolnshire’s best-kept secrets however is its natural coastline. Offering miles of beautiful sandy beaches away from the crowds… Discover the wilder natural coast of Sandilands Beach with its beautiful dog-friendly golden sands or unspoilt beach and sand dunes of Anderby Creek.
A great place for wildlife and bird-watching, there are nature reserves located along the coast. From the outskirts of Skegness to the mouth of The Wash, the Gilbraltar Point Nature Reserve, known for its diversity of wildlife, has walkways, cycle tracks and fully accessible paths throughout.
Experience one of England’s finest Heritage Cities, the Cathedral City of Lincoln is steeped in history. Walk in the footsteps of Kings with a visit to Lincoln Castle, home to one of the four surviving copies of the original Magna Carta or discover the medieval High Bridge over the River Witham with its 16th century shops.
The Lincolnshire Wolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty…hidden valleys, rolling countryside and historic market towns….visit Louth ‘the finest little market town in Britain’, Horncastle with its famous antique shops or Alford with its five sail windmill and arts and crafts markets…to name but a few!
Looking for great accommodation? Here’s a couple of recommendations in the area…
Holly Cottage is a characterful B&B, combining an intriguing mixture of a small period cottage with a stylish contemporary architect-designed extension. The guest area may also be rented as self-catering accommodation at certain times, sleeping up to 6 people. It sits in a lovely position, nestling on a valley side right at the edge of the village of Hagworthingham, close to the ford and surrounded by beautiful countryside. Located within the Lincolnshire Wolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, enjoy great walking and cycling from the door! The Coast is just a few minutes away.
Cackle Hill House is a family run farm offering superb Bed and Breakfast, set in a rural position within the village of Holbeach (voted amongst the ‘Best Kept Villages’ in Lincolnshire!) and also bordering Norfolk and Cambridge. Close to the shores of the Wash, with its marshes, trails and nature reserves, there are plenty of walking, cycling and bird-watching opportunities and only 6 miles from Spalding, a large market town on the Welland River in south Lincolnshire, famous as a centre of bulb agriculture. Some fine pubs and eateries serving excellent food close by.
Just a glimpse of what Lincolnshire can offer…so in 2023, the ‘Year of the Coast’, we hope you will agree it’s a worthy destination!
Happy Travelling!
