One of the greatest compliments a Bed & Breakfast owner can receive isn’t an award or a five-star review—it’s seeing familiar faces return year after year.

When we recently asked our Bed & Breakfast Nationwide Hosts to share their stories, we were delighted by the responses. From guests who have stayed more than twenty times to families returning across generations, these stories show that the UK’s independent B&Bs are about far more than simply providing a place to stay.

They’re about friendships, traditions and creating memories that last a lifetime.

Ramsey House, St Davids – 19 Seasons of Warm Welcomes

This year marks the 19th season for Ramsey House in the beautiful city of St Davids, Pembrokeshire. Over nearly two decades, the owners have welcomed countless visitors exploring the spectacular Pembrokeshire coastline, but it’s their returning guests that really stand out.

Their most loyal guest first stayed in 2011 and has now returned an incredible 23 times, usually visiting twice each year for a week’s holiday. Close behind is another couple who have enjoyed 21 week-long stays.

The owners shared a wonderful story with us:

“There is a lot of friendly rivalry between these two couples, who know of each other but are yet to meet!”

It’s a lovely reminder that guests become part of a B&B’s story, even when they’ve never met one another.

Gatcombe Farm, Seaton – 35 Years of Hospitality and Friendship

The owner of Gatcombe Farm began welcoming guests in 1989, at just 22 years old! Six years later, the business moved to the family’s home farm, where her mother-in-law had already been offering Bed & Breakfast accommodation. Over time, the property evolved from offering shared facilities to two spacious en-suite guest rooms, earning a 4-Star Silver Award and recognition for its excellent breakfasts.

Perhaps the most touching story is that of a couple from Germany who have returned almost every year since around 1989, rarely missing their annual two-week holiday.

B&B Host says:

“Every year we pick up from where we last left off the previous year. I am always sad to see them go because when they come next time, we are all a year older!”

She has also welcomed back guests who first stayed as children and now return with children of their own—a wonderful reminder of how independent B&Bs become part of family traditions.

Reflecting on 35 years of hospitality, she has experienced many highs and challenges, including raising three children while running the business and navigating the difficult Covid years. Yet her passion for welcoming guests remains as strong as ever.

The Wold Cottage, Filey – Holidays That Become Family Traditions

For 27 years, The Wold Cottage has been welcoming guests to the Yorkshire coast. Many visitors have returned every year, and some who first visited as children now bring their own families to continue the tradition.

As the B&B Host explains:

“I have guests who come every year! They even bring their family, who are grown up now but still love coming with their parents.”

It’s exactly the sort of story that captures the spirit of an independent B&B—places where holidays become cherished family memories.

This Host’s passion for Bed & Breakfasts extends well beyond her own doorstep. During a recent 18-day tour of Scotland, including Lewis and Skye, she took a supply of B&B Nationwide’s brochures to share along the way. She discovered first-hand just how valuable independent recommendations can be when searching for somewhere special to stay, with one recommendation in Inverness leading to an “amazing” B&B.
